Wiltshire Hungry Horse appeals after receiving food hygiene rating of one

A popular restaurant chain has seen one of its Wiltshire restaurants given one of the lowest hygiene ratings for a restaurant in the county.

According to the Food Standards Agency, Hungry Horse, The Rowden Arms pubs in Chippenham scored just one star in its last hygiene inspection.

A spokesperson for the pub told the Gazette and Herald the rating had been appealed and “will be raised to four” after an error was made.

The first results of the inspection are still on the FSA website, detailing part of the report and areas needing improvement.

Currently, one of the areas inspected is food safety management, which assesses issues such as the controls in place to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know the food safety and that the food safety manager is confident that the standards will be maintained in the future.

This was described as needing a “major improvement”.

The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, i.e. whether it has things like proper layout, good ventilation and hand-washing facilities, and pest control to allow proper food hygiene at the pub are also assessed.

This is Wiltshire:

During the March 26 inspection, it was also assessed as requiring “major improvement”.

However, hygienic food handling, including preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage, is currently described as ‘very good’ at the pub in the FSA report.

A Rowden Arms spokesperson said: “Wiltshire Council recently gave our pub a 1* food hygiene rating, which we strongly disagree with as we adhere to extremely high food safety standards.

“We immediately appealed this rating and the board accepted it was inaccurate and changed it to 4*.

“We are extremely disappointed that the original 1* rating has yet been posted as it does not reflect our high standards and we ask the board to update it to the correct 4* rating as soon as possible.”

NOTE: Since the publication of this story, the restaurant has appealed the verdict and the board has given them a new rating.
