Free educational tours of DSPCA shelters will return in May after two years of cancellation.

The Rathfarnham Animal Welfare Charity has been running the tours for years, but they have been on hold since 2020 due to the pandemic.

Schools, colleges, and community groups are all welcome to attend the tours and create a session appropriate to the age and ability of the participants.

The DSPCA held online educational conferences during Covid-19, but said it was “really nice” to return to face-to-face visits.

DSPCA’s Gillian Bird told Dublin Live: “We are still doing online discussions and we would encourage schools to do the online discussions and then follow it up with a visit to the shelter.

“Basically what we do is if they haven’t come to see us before, we do an introductory speech in our class.

“We tell them about the work we do here at the DSPCA, why the animals are here, what they will see, what they won’t see, why they will and won’t see certain animals.

“And we explain to them that it’s a working shelter with a working vet and we have wildlife and stuff.

“So we tell them we can bring them down to see the cats and dogs available for rehousing, but we can’t get you to areas that have very nervous wildlife like foxes and badgers.

“So we explain to them what animals are there and what we currently have in the shelter we are looking after.

“We will then have a topical discussion and discuss anything that might be of interest to teachers.”

Then the group is taken on a 1.5km walk around the grounds where there are views of the Hellfire Club and Dublin Bay.

Biodiversity, ecosystems and wildlife are all covered during a site visit and groups also visit the dog relocation kennels and cattery.

There is also a stable area with resident goats, ducks, chickens and pigs and a picnic area to end the tour with lunch.

Gillian said tours are free but donations are always appreciated.

She asked teachers to contact the DSPCA with any questions they had and said online chats were available ahead of the tour.

Vets are reminding Canterbury dog owners to get their pets vaccinated against parvovirus as the Selwyn district records its first case in a nationwide outbreak.

Selwyn Veterinary Center in Rolleston has reported a confirmed case of the life-threatening disease in one of its canine patients.

Veterinarian Yolande Howell said the dog “is not doing well at the moment”.

The SPCA recently reported that Auckland is experiencing its worst outbreak in 20 years.

Some veterinary clinics were seeing up to 20 cases a day, while cases had also appeared in Christchurch, Wellington and Northland.

Howell urged pet owners to check with their veterinarian to see if their dogs are fully vaccinated.

“Puppies should not be walked until they are fully vaccinated,” Howell said.

“Unfortunately with parvo, the death rate is really high.”

On its Facebook page, the center published the places of interest visited by the sick dog.

These were Rolleston Dog Park on February 8 and around Burnham Army Camp.

An SPCA spokesperson said last week that its inspectorate was aware of only one case in Selwyn.

BARK Kennels and Cattery manager Kristy Wood said it was concerning to have a case in the district.

The Rolleston facility, registered for 240 dogs, would be extra vigilant to ensure customers’ pets were up to date with vaccinations.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association said the highly transmissible viral disease affects the gastrointestinal tract.

Dogs caught it directly by contacting feces containing the virus, as well as indirectly by coming into contact with contaminated objects such as food and water bowls or shoes.

The first signs of lethargy, lack of appetite, and fever usually appeared within five to seven days of exposure, usually progressing rapidly to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

Unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated puppies six weeks to six months old were most at risk.

An animal lover has praised the RSPCA apprenticeship scheme which launched his career and gave him his beloved dog Sonny whose mother was rescued from a puppy farm.

Sam Kiddle volunteered at the RSPCA Block Fen Animal Center in Wimblington for two years before starting a Level 2 animal care apprenticeship under the charity’s apprenticeship scheme.

Sam, from Wisbech, wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after leaving school and so the 21-year-old, who has always been an animal lover, decided to start volunteering at the center to see if he would enjoy the role. . It didn’t take long before he realized that was what he wanted to do.

Sam Kiddle from Wisbech not only found his career but also his mate Sonny through the RSPCA. (54786055)

He started his apprenticeship in October 2019 in order to obtain the necessary diploma to become an animal assistant.

Sam said: “I liked that you could take your classes at the center rather than having to go to a separate college. I’m not a fan of classes and being in front of a computer all day, but it was good because it was much more hands-on and it was based on real-life experiences rather than made-up scenarios, which which made things much easier.

“I would recommend the apprenticeship for people who don’t want to go to college, for people who may not like school but want a career in animal welfare.”

Sam Kiddle from Wisbech not only found his career but also his mate Sonny through the RSPCA. (54786052)
Sam Kiddle from Wisbech not only found his career but also his mate Sonny through the RSPCA. (54786052)

Sam completed the apprenticeship in April last year and since then has been working as an animal care assistant on a fixed term contract.

He added: “My favorite part of the job is when animals are rehomed. You see those animals arrive that are neglected or need medical help, but then you can watch them transform and find new homes. Just seeing their journey from arrival to relocation is truly rewarding.

On a typical day, Sam’s job is to clean the kennels, cattery and small animal units, make sure the animals have fun activities to keep them entertained, walk the dogs, provide them with any medications they need and to put pet details on the RSPCA website and liaise with potential adopters.

As well as providing him with the qualification he needs to advance in his career, his apprenticeship also allowed him to discover the spaniel puppy Sonny. Sonny was born in RSPCA care after his mother was rescued from a puppy farm. Sam spent a lot of time with Sonny looking after him in the kennels and the two became very close. Shortly after learning, Sam adopted Sonny and he is now part of the family.

In the future, Sam hopes to continue working at the RSPCA Block Fen Animal Center and further his career in animal welfare.

This National Learning Week, the RSPCA celebrates the many benefits that learning brings to the charity and to individuals.

NatWest Group has helped expand the RSPCA apprenticeship scheme with its £500,000 levy transfer. This means the charity has been able to provide even more opportunities for people like Sam to advance their careers and play their part in helping the 100,000 animals the RSPCA rescues each year.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have started their one-day visit to Kent.

The Royals made their first stop of the day at Sheppey Matters, based at the Sheerness Healthy Living Center this morning (February 2).

Here they encountered community groups that help and promote a healthy lifestyle in the immediate community.

Their Royal Highnesses also met a refugee family who have settled in the county.

But the Royals have now split their time – with Camilla moving to the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (Battersea Brands Hatch) branch in Crowhurst Lane, Ash.

Paul O’Grady and Sausage eagerly await the arrival of Camilla and her dogs

Paul O’Grady was also on hand for most of the morning with his dog Sausage the dachshund in his role as Battersea Ambassador.

He is the face of the ITV show, For the Love of Dogs, documenting the journeys of dogs in search of forever homes.

Paul has lived in Aldington for over two decades.

Together they took a brief walk through the woods with one of the rescue dogs who has yet to find his loving home.

The Duchess’ own dogs, Beth and Bluebell, who accompanied their owner on tour, will be invited to join one of Paul O’Grady’s dogs in a training challenge known as Temptation Alley.

The premise of the game is that dogs are encouraged to ignore dog treats laid out on one path and walk straight towards their owner at the other end.

She said; “It is spreading like wildfire. In the last 12 months we have seen so many canine viruses. It could be due to more people getting dogs during the pandemic, I don’t know, but it has to be Covid related somehow. I never knew him like that. Normally we only have one bout of kennel cough a year, we are now on the fifth outbreak in the last 12 months. Last year it got so bad that we had to close for a week.

Blind Blackpool woman mourns the loss of her retired guide dog

Part of the problem is that it’s hard to clean up after dogs when they have diarrhea and other dogs are naturally sniffling and that’s how it spreads. It seems to be quite contagious.

Irene Farley’s dog, Olly, fell ill on Thursday, January 20, 2022.

“He started vomiting around 4 a.m. I could tell he was wrong so I left him in the garden and he had really bad diarrhoea.

Her vet, Andrew Mellor on Norbreck Road, advised her to monitor symptoms and stick to a bland diet of chicken and rice.

“He wasn’t drinking anything and he was very lethargic. He’s started to pull himself together now, but he still hasn’t eaten and he has diarrhoea.

Irene, from Bispham, said the eight-year-old cocker spaniel had visited the local beach and Stanley Park. She doesn’t know where he caught the bug.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) advises that with prompt veterinary treatment almost all dogs make a full recovery from this rare severe gastric bug.

Dr Shotton said: “With gastroenteritis most cases are mild, but some dogs may require hospitalization with a drip. In the worst situations, it can become haemorrhagic leading to secondary complications or even death, but this is very rare.

Five young sons of a man who was killed in a dog attack have been orphaned eight years after their mother lost a battle with cancer.

A second tragedy struck their families on Wednesday afternoon when Adam Watts was mutilated to death on the outskirts of Dundee.

The popular 55-year-old died at the Juniper kennel and cattery he runs in Kirkton of Auchterhouse, about five miles northwest of the city.

Adam Watts was killed by a dog in the kennel he runs on the outskirts of Dundee.

Tragically, the deadly attack orphaned her five sons, four of whom were teenagers and one who was just 10 years old.

Their mother, Eileen, lost a courageous battle with cancer in February 2013, at the age of 46.

In 2018, the Daily Record recounted how the couple’s youngest son raised thousands of pounds in honor of his mother by crossing the Tay Road Bridge 20 TIMES.

Back then, Adam couldn’t contain his pride in his boy’s amazing feat of endurance.

He told us, “I am overflowing with pride.

Tributes have poured in for Adam since Wednesday afternoon’s horrific attack on rural kennels.

We spoke to a number of people in the tight-knit village who were devastated by the incident which happened shortly after 1 p.m.

Eileen, mother of five, who fought a courageous battle with bowel cancer.

They described him as a “great man” who “loved his dogs” and “supported his five sons so well.”

A devastated resident told the Record: “It’s such a tragic thing, I can’t believe it, he was such a great guy.

“He had raised his five boys who will be devastated.

“Adam was a good father to them, he supported them well.

Write on the Eileen Watts Tribute Fund website, Adam described his wife’s courageous battle with bowel and liver cancer.

He recounted how brave she was and how the family was supported by Maggie’s Center in Dundee.

Describing his fight, he wrote: “She immediately adopted an attitude of hatred towards Cancer and was adamant that he was not going to stay,” like an uninvited guest to a party “, as she did. said.”

And he added, “Eileen passed away on February 26, 2013 and our 5 wonderful boys and I continue to use Maggie in group or 1-to-1 therapy and counseling sessions.

“It has proven to be a source of great comfort and support for us as a family and we are by no means unique in this area.”

A police car was parked behind a closed gate on the small rural property all day as officers guarded the property.

Locals described seeing a significant amount of activity there last night.

One said: “There were a number of police cars and at least one ambulance in the kennel in the afternoon.

“It looked like a really serious incident.

“A family lives in the house next to the kennel and I think the owner was killed.

“It’s such a tragedy, especially at this time of year.”

Calls to Juniper Kennels and Cattery went unanswered all morning.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.

Officers also said the death was not considered suspicious.

They told the Record: “Officers received a report that a man was attacked by a dog in Kirkton Auchterhouse at around 1:10 pm on Wednesday 22 December.

“Emergency services responded, however, the 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The death is not treated as a suspect and a report will be given to the finance attorney.”
