Not all dogs can live in harmony with smaller animals – the high prey of some breeds can make it difficult to have both dogs and cats.

But gentle Labrador Bertie has proven that he is not only happy to live alongside seven kittens, but that he has taken them under his wing as his own.

The caring dog is absolute love and has melted hearts after raising the motherless kittens for the past few weeks, TeamDogs reports.

The rescue dog, a former resident of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, began caring for the stray kittens – which were found by the side of the road – after they were brought home.

They were only about two weeks old when they were discovered and would not have survived on their own without their mother.

Luckily, a member of the public spotted them and took them straight to Battersea to be checked.

After a thorough examination, the kittens returned home with Battersea’s head nurse Rachel, who had offered to welcome them so that she and her rescue Bertie could watch over them.

Rachel told TeamDogs: “I am incredibly proud of Bertie for the way he has taken care of the kittens over the past few weeks. At less than two years old, he’s barely an adult himself, but you won’t. wouldn’t think when you see him how incredibly patient and caring he has been.

“These kittens have certainly been a handful, from the early days of needing round-the-clock bottle-feeding, until the time they first discovered the joys of rock climbing.

“Not only did Bertie help the kittens grow into confident, outgoing little cats, he also entertained me.”

Kittens typically spend the first eight weeks of life with their mother, as she will need to feed them and teach them survival skills until they are ready to fend for themselves.

If a motherless kitten is brought to Battersea during these crucial first weeks of development, a foster family will take on the role of mom, including regular bottle feeds and toilet assistance.
