Who we are

PAWS has been in the area for many years now and during that time we have rescued and housed over 1,500 animals. We offer pets a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life with a new family. We started in 2007 when our Center Manager, Sue, worked on a stall in Todmorden Market. She then decided to help foster dogs. She lived in an apartment with her, a bed, a TV and lots of dog cages! (Looks like dream TV, Bed and Dogs!). The vet bills were way too high, so she decided enough was enough and went to the local newspaper to ask people to help her organize a rescue. 25 people showed up in a fire station meeting room and voila! PAWS was born! We obtained registered charity status in 2014.

What we do

2.7million animals enter UK shelters every year and we know it all too well. We have a waiting list as long as your arm and it rarely slows down! We rescue, repatriate and rehabilitate cats and dogs in the beautiful Calder Valley and beyond. Sue dreamed of not limiting who could save. We treat each case on its own merits, regardless of age, location or ability. We just gave our greyhound Trish to a gentleman in the 90s!! (She helped him dig his garden whether he wanted to or not!). We offer a lifetime membership for all of our pets, so if a person’s situation changes, we take the pet back no questions asked.

Why we need to stay open

We come from a small market town in West Yorkshire where the motto of the town is kindness (and they really mean it!). We host many events throughout the year including dog shows, fun days, coffee mornings and even our town crier’s signature at the station. We have people of all ages who enjoy showing their dogs at our shows and who come back to support us again and again. We have a family of whippets that attend almost every dog show with a Grease themed costume act. More importantly, we have students from our local college to help us. We also have people with mental health issues who have been allowed to hang out with our animals for a period of time. We take care of saving animals and people too.

During the Covid

During the first lockdown, we didn’t want to disappear from the map, so we held cat and dog shows online and had a lot of fun. We have seen a massive influx of “pandemic puppies” who are untrained and suffering from severe separation anxiety. Our beautiful Charlie was passed on and then dumped on Bacup moor to be found by a farmer. He’s such a good boy and he’s still waiting for his forever home. He is just one example of the impact of covid on animal welfare.

what we need

We require 3-5 acres of land with a building or building footprint. We need to buy a new site where we can build kennels and a cattery. It should have good access for a static trailer and enough land for the dogs to exercise off leash. Kennels need access to the outdoors, just like cattery cat enclosures. If we had the space, we could improve housing for cats and dogs and also increase our ability to provide rescue space for animals in need. There will be many costs involved in moving and rebuilding. We already have a cash deposit, around £15,000. IF we could find a place that could offer us a long-term lease (10 years and more) that would also be a solution to our crisis.

Thanks

Keep an eye on our fundraising events on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

PLEASE PLEASE help us raise this money – the dogs and cats in this area desperately need us to continue to offer the help we provide them when they are no longer wanted or that their owners are no longer able to take care of them. Without PAWS, they wouldn’t have a second chance at a happy outcome.

We really appreciate all of your support and kindness. We want to continue saving animals in the future, so your donations mean the world to us!

Lots of love from all of us at PAWS!
