Pop-up cat café serves cuddles and coffee

A FELINE fundraiser took place this weekend, when a pop-up cafe for cats opened on the island.

The cafe – set up and run by cat owner Athena Kallias at her home in St Brelade – also held a raffle to raise funds for cat shelters in France and Greece.

Ms Kallias said: “The first few sessions were packed, I think around 25 people showed up with their children so it was a full house.

“We had three sessions on Saturday and three more [on Sunday]the other six continuing into next weekend.

“Afternoon tea was made by Fredericks – Food Made Fun as we had plenty of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options to satisfy.”

Ms Kallias and her team, including Fiona Stratford, owner of the Cozy Cats cattery, and Jo Abraham, manager of the Jersey Cat Search Group, came together to raise funds for the France-based association CATS, which sent many pets in Jersey. for adoption, and the Halkidiki Animal Rescue Center in Greece.

“Jo and Fiona helped with the raffle and afternoon tea during the Saturday sessions, and my partner Tobias Gosselin helped me on Sunday with my friend Julie Mallett,” Ms Kallias added.

“Everyone who came said they had a great experience, although sometimes we couldn’t chat with everyone.

“All the feedback brought me to tears, the cats have outdone themselves after all the sessions so far, and we’re so grateful for the support.”

Once the final amount raised has been calculated, the cat café team will publish the result online.

The cat café will open again this Saturday and Sunday, with slots already reserved on both days.
