There is a long tradition of foreign students coming to Gorey every summer to improve their English. Young groups of language students have become part of the summertime buzz in the sunny southeast. There is a big increase in the number of Spanish students in particular, enrolling in summer camps in the Gorey area. North Wexford has become very popular with Spanish families wishing to send their teenagers to Ireland for English language development.
The challenge in the Gorey area this year is to find enough host families. In addition to the income it generates, welcoming a foreign student can open you up to the culture of another country, especially for young people who would like to take advantage of it to perfect the European language they are studying at school. . Experienced host families say they appreciate the short duration of the summer camps of three to four weeks, as well as the full program of activities from Monday to Saturday that is organized for the students. Families interested in hosting students this summer can contact Mary on 087 6504379 for details.
Lisa is hosting a fundraiser for a darts display at the Golden Anchor pub in Castletown on Saturday July 30.
Professional players Tony O’Shea and Andy Hamilton will travel from England for the event and there will be 26 challengers hoping to beat them.
Also on the night, a game of darts will be won by someone in the crowd winning the ball card on the spot, while a game of darts will be auctioned off. The winner will be able to play a leg of darts and win the signed dartboard. Two raffles will also take place during the evening.
The organizers are looking for companies to sponsor the challengers and in return the company will be advertised on the souvenir program and through announcements during the evening. If anyone could donate a prize for the raffle, that would also be greatly appreciated.
The fundraiser is being held to benefit Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, Harold’s Cross in memory of Pamela. Call Lisa on 087 265 2595 if you want to support the event.
