Gemma Atkinson opens new £75,000 Bleakholt cattery

A new facility that will allow an animal sanctuary to care for more cats has been officially opened by Bury celebrity Gemma Atkinson.

The Hits Radio presenter has opened the new Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary cattery enclosures which allows the Edenfield Sanctuary to help an additional 100 cats.

Gemma is president of Bleakholt and attended the opening with her daughter Mia, showing her one of the kittens who will be using the cattery before being rehomed.

She said: ‘I had a wonderful day at Bleakholt. I was honored to open our newly renovated cattery, so now our rescue kittens have a beautiful place with us until they find their forever home.

The refit cost £75,000.

Sanctuary manager Karen Weed said: ‘The new cattery enclosures will be crucial in enabling the charity to help even more cats who have no one.

“We are very happy with them as they are large in size, allow cats plenty of stimulation but also places to hide if they are still feeling nervous.

“We are very grateful to the Pets at Home Foundation, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and the Bolton Guild JA & F Smith Animal Charity Fund for providing grants to fund the project.

“We also want to extend a huge thank you to our wonderful President Gemma Atkinson for opening the new paddocks.”
